thanksgivingThanksgiving is only a few days away and as we look forward to enjoying a long weekend with family and friends, we thought we would put a few tips together to help you save some coin when organizing your celebrations.

  1. Plan your menu wisely.  If you plan your meal ahead of time you can look for discounts on food items that can influence your menu.   If you still have not chosen your menu items you can concentrate of purchasing seasonal local food root vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, squash and turnip.  Those are the perfect additions to any Thanksgiving table.
  2. Decorate your home with nature!  You don’t have to look far or spend any money to decorate your home beautifully for the season.   Simply go outside to collect fallen leaves of all colours to make a fall display to your table.  Add twigs, pinecones, branches, small pumpkins, gourds and seasonal flowers and bring your table fully to life.
  3. Make your dinner potluck to save costs.  Ask each guest to bring an item to contribute to the table.  This will save you time and money!
  4. Use hollowed bread loaves for charming serving containers for cheeses, dips, olives, chips and small sandwiches.  If you don’t own many serving dishes, bread makes a creative and inexpensive alternative.
  5. Organize your dishes to cook together to save on oven energy.  If you have a few side dishes cook them all together – this will also save you some time to get other preparations done.
  6. Put your leftovers to good use.  Use your leftover turkey and vegetable side dishes to make a delicious soup that will feed your family for a few days.  Look up recipes that use the food items you have left over so you don’t waste anything.
  7. Use the energy efficient cycle when washing your dishes and avoid heat dry to save some money on costs.  Or just leave them to air dry.

Remember, you don’t have to spend very much to make your Thanksgiving dinner a success and memorable for your guests.   Spending quality time with family and friends is most important.

From our table to yours we at OCCA Consumer Debt Relief wish you and yours a very happy and debt free Thanksgiving!.
