Hey fellow Canadians, are you ready to kick off another summer? After the winter we just had I think we’ve all earned some sunshine and warmth. The upcoming Victoria Day long weekend marks the unofficial start of summer in the province. Whether you plan on spending the weekend opening up the cottage, making home improvements or barbecuing in your backyard, your provincial community is ready to help get you prepared. The province of Ontario is offering important tips to help ensure a safe environment for family and friends.
Get the summer season off to a safe start by remembering to:
• Ensure circuit breakers are switched to the “off” position in your electrical panel before turning on the power at a cottage. After you turn on the main switch, turn circuit breakers on one at a time to avoid surges that can damage your appliances.
• Check all appliance extension cords for signs of damage or wear – especially for cracking and rodent damage.
• Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors where needed and replace the batteries at the beginning of each season.
• Make sure tree branches are trimmed and well away from power lines to avoid unnecessary power outages and safety hazards.
• Be careful when using ladders around power lines – electricity can “jump” from a power line to a metal object.
• Clean and inspect your barbecue before the first use.
• Contact ON1Call before planting a tree, building a deck or fence, to locate any buri ed electrical wires so you can dig safely.
Care of the Ontario government, here are a few quick facts to keep in mind over this holiday weekend:
• This year in Ontario, roughly 2,000 people will end up in the emergency room because of an electrical injury.
• Barbecues emit carbon monoxide and should only be used outside.
• Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of fatal poisonings in North America. Exposure to high concentrations can cause death in just a few minutes.
• May 11-17, 2015 is Power Line Safety Awareness Week in Ontario.
We encourage you to explore your local community for inexpensive or free events to entertain yourself and your families this weekend. Enjoy your weekend and be safe!
