Canadian winters are challenging at best, especially if you are a motorist. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, placing extra demands on our vehicles and driving skills. A few simple tips, however, will help to prepare for the often hazardous conditions that lie in the months ahead.
The first, and most important, tip to help your drives safer is to SLOW DOWN. Most winter collisions occur when drivers do not allow for enough time or distance to brake effectively. If you do not have winter tires, you should allow for even more distance between you and the driver in front of you, and brake earlier in order to complete to a stop safely.
Other winter driving safety tips can include:
• Keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you in case you have to brake suddenly on a slippery surface.
• Get your vehicle winter-ready with a maintenance check-up. Keeping your car running well may also help avoid any expensive surprise repairs.
• Make sure you have sufficient windshield washer fluid in the reservoir and keep an extra one in the vehicle.
• Clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, roof and license plate.
• Install winter tires before winter begins. Winter tires are often not available later in the season. If re-using tires, check them to see if it is time to replace them. The auto service technician would also be able to advise on this.
• Remember to check tire air pressure frequently, as it decreases in cold weather.
• Prepare a winter survival kit for your vehicle. Having essential supplies can provide some comfort and safety for you and your passengers should you become stranded.
As winter’s conditions challenge our driving conditions, we need to be prepared. Protect your car and the people in it this winter by adhering to these tips.
