Welcome October – the month of changing leaf colours, harvested crops, plump pumpkins and scary scarecrows.  It is also the month of crafty retailers baiting consumers and anxious trick-or-treaters with pricey Halloween decorations and popular candy.  Who wouldn’t want the perfect costume for their child, inviting decorations to dress their home with and the best treats on the block for Halloween?  Can you afford it?  You shouldn’t have to break your budget to host a perfect Halloween party or decorate your home with ghoulish greetings.

Here are some ideas that will help you celebrate Halloween without breaking the bank.

  • The dollar store is a great stop for Halloween decorations and candy. You can get hanging ghosts, witches and bats that will terrify any doorway.  Festive crafts, clothing, cards, paper, costumes and paint can help dress up any trick-or-treater.  Giant spiders, howling creatures, plastic rats, crafty corn stocks, lawn tombstones and coffins are only a fraction of the decor options you have to spruce up any home for Halloween.  Be as creative as you want, as long as you stick to your budget.  It’s easy to get caught up in all the glory of Halloween and spend more than you bargained for.
  • Do you have some old clothes you don’t wear anymore?  Distress a few pieces to dress like a zombie.   Dress up a scarecrow and plant a few of them in your front yard.  Use some old sheets to drape across the ceiling or windows for a haunting look.  A great display can cost pennies if you start by sourcing props at home before heading out to buy things.
  • Pumpkins, gourds and corn husks are the all time favorite things to decorate with.  If you choose to decorate only with these, they can be relatively inexpensive and make a lovely festive look on any porch.
  • Do you like the smell of cinnamon, apple and pumpkin?  You don’t have to buy the fancy candles to get this scent simmering in your home.   Combine a little cinnamon, applesauce and all-spice in some water and simmer in a pot on the stove.  Your house will smell heavenly in no time – but be mindful to watch that pot on the stove at all times!  You could also buy scented potpourri or scented pine cones.  They are available at most retailers including the dollar store.
  • Thrift stores offer great ideas for costumes and you can’t beat the prices.
  • Instead of buying the expensive candy for your trick-or-treaters, rent a popcorn machine with some of your neighbours and offer bags of popcorn to the kids.  They’ll get a kick out of the fresh popcorn and you’ll find that your cost in sharing the rental will be less than buying the 4 bags of candy.  A recent poll suggests the average Canadian spends $66 on Halloween candy.  You’re share in a popcorn machine could be as less as $20.

Spend wisely and Happy Halloween!.
