On the eve of the much anticipated May long weekend you may be looking for enjoyable places to visit with your family. There are a number of fun events taking place sure to entertain all ages in all kinds of venues. While you are researching, keep a firm budget in mind and plan accordingly for the weekend. This will allow you and your family to enjoy a great weekend without the worry of overspending.
Here are a few great picks that are sure to treat all ages and won’t bruise your wallet.
- Ashbridge’s Bay: Who doesn’t enjoy free fireworks? Bring a blanket and cuddle up with your family to enjoy a spectacular show in the sky. Monday at 10 p.m. Free.
- The Toronto Harbourfront Centre is a non profit cultural organization that offers a variety of cultural activities to the public free of charge. Located along the shores of Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto, visitors can stroll the boardwalk on Harbourfront’s 10-acre site, relax in one of the parks or skate in the winter. Inside, take in a lecture, art exhibit or show, shop or dine.
- Pack a brown bag lunch and attend one of the Canadian Opera Company’s free lunch hour performances. Enjoy dance or a variety of musical style concerts in the sun bathed ampitheatre of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, built in 2006.
- Take a ferry across to Centre Island to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Getting to Centre Island requires a ferry ride. Ferries leave every 15 – 30 minutes, cost $4 – $8 return, and take about 10 minutes. The island boasts 600 acres of parkland including fantastic trails for walking, biking and rollerblading. Other than the ferry ride, there’s no cost, but a small amusement park, restaurants, and other attractions may lure you to open up your wallet. Keep the budget in check by bringing a picnic lunch or take advantage of the fire pits and barbecue.
- Have a picnic at a local park with the family. Bring a baseball or soccer ball and enjoy a game with your kids. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best and most memorable.
- Go for a hike at a provincial park. The most you may pay for such adventures will be a donation to the park, and at some parks an inexpensive parking fee.
Whatever you decide to do this May long Weekend, plan within your budget and allow a little room for some small incidental costs just in case. Include a dinner and/or lunch out in your budget if you can afford it. The more reasonable your budget is the less likely you’ll succumb to any retail temptation. You want to enjoy your weekend without the worry of facing the music when the weekend comes to an end.
Happy Victoria Day Weekend everyone ~ play safe!
