SummerImageSummer is approaching fast and some of us are scrambling to book summer programs for our children. Whatever financial situation we have, we all need to make arrangements to keep our children occupies for the 8-week summer vacation. There are camps and activities available that make it affordable for families of all sizes.

Camps

There are many camps that offer financial aid or sibling discounts making them more affordable for families. Assistance of this type is usually awarded based on need so it is important that parents apply early for such camps. For a list of camps go to www.ourkids.net/cheap-summer-camps.com. Your local YMCA will also offer affordable and fun camps for kids aged 7-17.

Programs

Public libraries often offer free summer programs that include crafts, reading, theatre, puppet shows and music. There is a high demand for such programs so book your child in early! It’s a good idea to visit your local library with your child once a week for a fresh collection of books to help occupy their time in a fun way.

Movies

Many theatres offer free or cheap showings of family friendly movies on weekday mornings. Check your local theatres for more information.

Open your home as summer daycare

If you cannot afford to enrol your children in camps over the summer, consider opening your home to other children to care for over the summer along with your own. You will need, of course, to adhere to the provincial regulations to ensure safety and proper care. For some, it is a great way to stay home with your children as well as earning some income.

Concerts and Theatre in the Park

Many parks host free concerts and plays during the summer. Take the kids on a picnic in the park and enjoy some culture and musical entertainment without spending a dime. Check your local newspaper or information centre for more details.

Nature Programs

Local parks and conservation areas have nature centres that often offer free programs to children that let them explore the outdoors and learn about how to care for the ecosystem.

Check your local newspaper and city/town websites for free events and programs for information about upcoming programs to help entertain your family over the summer months. Remember, the more resourceful you are when finding programs, the less money you may need to spend!
